Here comes the sun: summer clothes, summer comfort

As winter makes way for spring, people can start filing their hats, gloves and thermal underwear away for another year. Though best not keep them too far out of reach, as the UK weather can spring a few surprises at any time of year.

With spring in full flow, it’s perhaps time to start thinking ahead to the next stage – everyone’s favourite season, summer. Whether you’re planning to risk a summer break on the UK coast or further afield on the continent, now’s the time for a wardrobe makeover.

It’s easy to think that you can get by just fine with last summer’s clobber. You’re best not waiting until the eve of your summer holiday only to discover that your flip-flops are worn and grubby, your bikini has lost its shape and your favourite flowery dress has actually got a red wine stain down the front.

Moreover, there’s nothing like a bit of a wardrobe workout to help shake off the last remaining winter cobwebs. Summer’s almost here and it’s time to prepare. So where to start?

Well, it pays to get the basics right. A funky new pair of shades is a good starting point, whilst a wide-brimmed hat will help keep the summer sun at bay too. Let’s not think of just function, summer is all about fashion – and keeping comfortable when things start to get a little sticky, of course.

If the pool or seaside beckons this summertime, then why not invest in a funky lightweight studded kaftan, which is a fantastic way to cover-up in the sun. It certainly beats draping a giant-sized beach towel around you!

For evening wear, why not go for a halter neck colour block dress, with an empire line waist that creates a most flattering shape? This will work well with simple flip-flops or sandals – and remember, consider comfort as well as coolness when selecting your summer footwear. Summer doesn’t mean 24-hour warmth – it can still get a little nippy at night, so a lightweight evening jacket won’t go wrong either.

Don’t think a rucksack will do much to complement your summer clobber? A new bag always helps harmonise any new outfit, so why not go for a straw basket with rope handles and a stylish stud finish?

The sky really is the limit when choosing your new summer clothes. What works for someone else might not work for you, so take your time and make sure you buy things you’ll actually wear!
