What You Must Know Before Bringing Fido Home

Adding a dog to your life can be one of the best experiences ever – or an absolute nightmare – depending on how much thought and planning you’ve put into this decision.

You need to consider your lifestyle and surroundings, the time and energy you have, as well as how much money you want to spend.

So before you commit to those big brown eyes and wagging tail, be sure you know (or have at least thought about) the answers to some pretty basic questions.

QUESTION #1 Puppy or adult dog?

It’s the first thing you really need to think about. Puppies are cute and cuddly, but they don’t stay that way for very long – you’ll spend a lot more time with the adult dog than you do the adorable puppy.

You should also know that it’s very hard to get a good read on the future personality (not to mention size, coat and activity level) of the adult dog from the puppy. Those adorable balls of fluff can also be mischievous, defiant and destructive and go through a stage of rebellious adolescence where they need almost constant supervision. You should also consider the cost and time commitment of vet visits, house training, behavior training and socialization.

In contrast, adult dogs have passed through all this – so what you see is what you get. You may have little information on the puppyhood and early life, but you’ll more than make up for this with an adult dog’s better attention span (making training easier), as well as a more accurate read on size and the amount of shedding.

Your vet will also be better able to diagnose health problems in an adult – ones that cannot be foreseen in a puppy. What’s more, choosing an adult dog is a valuable service to good animals that need a loving home. You’ll find some wonderful dogs at your local animal shelter or online at petfinder.com

Other good sources are your local classified pet column for lots of good, loving dogs that are “free to good home”.

QUESTION #2: Purebred or Mixed Breed?

If you’ve got your heart set on a particular look or breed, need to consider allergies or other health issues, or have a specific purpose (a hunting companion or guard dog) in mind, then a pure breed is probably the right choice. The American Kennel Club (online at akc.org/) recognizes over 150 different breeds and offers a good deal of information on each one.

Purebreds come with generations of breeding to strengthen and refine special skills – so that tracking or retrieving abilities become far superior to those of the general population of dogs. The down side is that this can unknowingly pass on other, less desirable traits or serious health problems as well.

Which breed is right for you and your family? Here’s a quick, easy-to-do quiz that might help you narrow down the choices: www2.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

For many of us, a key factor that drives our choice of breeds is cost. Mixed breed dogs are almost always more affordable than a purebred, though they make take more time and legwork to find. You might want to start with your local animal shelter where dogs are brought in for a variety of different reasons and are examined by a vet and cared for until they can be adopted – some shelters even screen dogs for behavior issues.

To adopt a dog (puppy or adult) from the shelter you’ll typically be asked to pay a small fee to cover the exams and cost of neutering.

Rescue groups are another source for a potential best friend. Here dogs are placed in foster care with an experienced and loving host family, so you’ll know a lot about each animal’s temperament and level of training. If you do go this route, you should expect to complete some type of application process, as well as submit to possible home visits and a somewhat lengthy screening process.

If all this seems too involved for you, consider making a regular check your local paper’s classified section. You should also get the word out to family, friends and co-workers. The more people who know you are looking, the better.

QUESTION #3: Large or Small?

As you have for the age and breed, you need to put some serious thought into the size of the dog you plan to bring into your home. Common sense might suggest that a large dog in a small apartment isn’t the best choice, but these arrangements can be quite successful, if handled properly. Often it isn’t so much about the size of the animal (or yours for that matter) but rather your ability to be in command and control at all times that really counts.

Beyond this, larger breeds tend to cost more – you’ll need to buy more food, bigger crates, beds and toys, not to mention a sturdier collar and leash. Vet bills for surgery or medications will be higher, and grooming will also cost more.

Smaller breeds are more affordable, but have a reputation (not deserved, but popular) for being high-strung and nippy, and can easily get underfoot, be hurt unintentionally or slip off unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of a busy home.

Answer, or at least think about, these questions and you’ll have a much better idea of what you’re getting into. Not that you still can’t be swept away by a pair of wide, trusting eyes or an adorable little face, but when that moment comes you’ll have a far better chance of making this new addition to your life a lasting one.

How to Obedience Train Your Dog: the Simple Way

SitStayFetch is one of the premier dog training products–which, as we at MyBuyOrTry.com know, is not easy. There are a lot of imitator products and courses out there on how to train your dog, but only a few actually know what they’re talking about.

With a wide variety of real dog training experts and veterinarians behind it, SitStayFetch is the real deal. You get everything from house-training information that works, to proper corrective and obedience training info.

Even better, the course doesn’t teach you rules that only apply to one kind of dog; in fact, they cover specific techniques for handling all kinds of breeds and specific dogs. Which is great for me, because information about dachshunds isn’t going to necessarily help me with my Cocker Spaniel.

The book and course recognize the fact that it may be easy to correct, say, a Golden Retriver–but your nippy Jack Russell is a whole different story!

Included in the course is the comprehensive SitStayFetch Training book; an interactive audio version of the course; great bonus books, particularly “Secrets to Becoming the Alpha Dog”; and something no other dog training course offers: a personalized e-mail consultation (more on this below).

Surprisingly, it doesn’t cost much at all for this: just !. On top of that, there’s a two-month money-back-guarantee, and I know there are no questions asked, so you won’t have a problem (but hopefully you don’t need to resort to this measure!).

The service, as well, is top-notch. For no extra cost, we were able to e-mail not one but two long, detailed question about our dog problem. Within a day of each, we got an EXCELLENT reply, with thorough information that was actually specific to our Spaniel. The Support Team seemed genuinely sympathetic, and gave great informaton that solved our dog’s problem pretty quickly.

For that reason alone, we highly recommend Kingdom of Pets Dog Obedience Training. Your dog–and your family–will thank you. :)

FINAL RATING? Strong Buy It recommendation. Fun, interesting information, particularly about alpha dog training–a whole bonus section.

And at , incredibly affordable.

Buying a New Car, Insurance and All

Buying a new car is a daunting experience even for those who’ve done it before but for the novice, it can be hellish. Tales of demonic salesmen ready to strip you of your last penny and sell you something that should have been condemned last decade swim around in your head, made worse by the fact that once on the forecourt, they watch you with the intensity of a spider eyeing up its next fly.

But buying a new car needn’t be quite so scary as people make out. If you go in forewarned and forearmed, you could not only come away with the car of your dreams, but at a possibly lower price than the salesmen wanted to sell it for.

The first thing to do is decide on a budget, and stick to it. Next, think about what car you’d like, and what you’ll be using it for. You may fancy the latest sporty little number, but if you’re going to be needing to taxi your offspring and their friends around, a nippy 2 seater wouldn’t be very practical. So make a list of everything you want in a car, and try to decide on a model which would be suitable for all.

Next, find out what car insurance group your potential car falls into. While this won’t give you exact price, it will give you an idea of how much you can expect to pay. Find out the group of your current car too, so you’ll be able to predict whether the new car will cost more or less (remember, 1 is the lowest group and 20 is the highest).

Do your research. Get on the internet and find a preliminary car insurance quote for your chosen car. If you find the premium too high, you may need to think about going for a different, possibly smaller, model which will give you cheap car insurance without compromising on your needs.

Once you’ve figured out how much you can reasonably afford, head down to the dealership. Tell them exactly what model you want, and if they try to steer you towards something else, walk away. The trick is to be firm. Salesmen are used to getting the upper hand, but remember, they need your business. You don’t need theirs.

Inspect the car thoroughly and ask lots of questions, but try not to appear too enthusiastic. Casually ask about a test drive, but remain calm and cool. If they think you’re not overly bothered, they’re more likely to offer discounts just to get your business. But let them know that you are a serious buyer otherwise they may not bother with you.

If there are several dealerships with the model you’d like, don’t be afraid to play them off against each other. Get a quote from each, then give them all a chance to beat the lowest quote. The chances are they’ll be wanting your business so much they’ll miraculously be able to knock a couple of hundred off the asking price.

Once you’ve settled on a price, you’re ready to sort out the financing option. Don’t sign anything without fully reading it first. The salesmen hate this, but don’t be put off by sighing, tapping of feet and pointedly looking at watches. If necessary, ask to sit in private or even take the contract home for thorough perusal before signing. Don’t be afraid to query anything you’re unsure of. It’s been known for an unscrupulous salesman to add something extra onto the contract just before signing, which could end up costing you quite a bit extra, so sign it and date it as soon as you’re happy with it.

One more thing: Once you’ve decided on a model, take out your new car insurance policy to start on the day of purchase, then you’ll be covered from the moment you leave the forecourt. Some new cars come with free insurance for a set period, so find out if this is included in your package, and make sure the dealership hasn’t bumped the price up to reflect it.

How To Create Healthy Powerhouse Sandwich Recipes

Making healthy sandwiches allows you the opportunity to utilize your creative talents in the kitchen once again. Sandwiches can be created as an entire meal, providing all the nutrients necessary for your healthy living.

To create a healthy powerhouse sandwich, use your imagination, by including herbs such as fresh basil leaves, cilantro or fresh parsley. Fresh watercress gives a sandwich a great nippy taste; in addition it gives an appealing look and has virtually no calories. Did you know that watercress is a good source of beta carotene, calcium, iron and potassium?

Fresh chives, which contain sulphur oil (which may lower blood pressure if one consistently eats a large amount), fresh romaine lettuce, is low in calories and high in fiber. Try to choose the dark green leafy lettuce; spinach which is full of vitamin A and folate, and high in Vitamin C and potassium, is an excellent choice for sandwiches as it is also a vegetarian source of protein.

When creating your sandwiches, try using sliced whole rings of green, red, or yellow peppers, as they are not only colourful, but an excellent low calorie source of Vitamin C.

Try using sandwich style sliced dill pickles (patted dry)or cucumbers sliced. Crisp fresh snow peas, are low in calories and high in Vitamins A and C. Snow peas, besides containing protein, help to create a nutritionally complete meal when combined with whole grain products.

Sliced beef steak tomatoes make a great addition to any sandwich. Try using asparagus or green capers on top of your filler. We have only the a few “green” and some red vegetable and herb ideas to season your sandwiches.

Fillings for healthy sandwiches are where we need to use care in calorie use. Always use a light Miracle Whip, light cream cheese or Dijon mustard. Light Miracle Whip and cream cheese taste just as good as the regular products and are one half or less than the calories and fat.

The most favorite fillings for sandwiches are hard boiled eggs, tuna, shrimp, roast beef, thinly sliced ham, smoked salmon in thin slices with cream cheese and capers, various light cheeses, such as Edam, Light Mozzarella, Provolone, Asiago, avocado sliced or in a spread, artichoke tapenade, Black Forest Ham, chicken salad spread, chicken breast slices,

Avocados, which incidentally, are fruits, are high in the “good” fats, meaning mono-saturated, but always remember they are high in calories and fats. These are only a few ideas, but, add the greens previously mentioned and you will have a deluxe healthy sandwich when a good protein is added to your greens.

The last item I will write about is bread, one of the most important items. The healthy breads to look for are logically the ones that contain whole grains, oat, flax, spelt bread, rye bread. These breads contain the “good” carbohydrates that constitute a healthy food choice.

White flour breads have no nutritional value for our bodies. Please try to introduce these good choice breads to your children at any early age, so they will become accustomed to eating healthy bread for healthy living.

Creating healthy appealing powerhouse sandwiches is a learned craft; you will be using all the necessary nutrients of a healthy meal for healthy living. There are a multitude of other types of healthy sandwiches, party sandwiches, rolled sandwiches, pinwheel roll-up sandwiches and even wraps to enjoy creating for you and your family.

You will be surprised at just how creativity bursts out in you when you start making these healthy recipes. These breads taste marvelous, but, it is sometimes a chore to talk children into them. Start children with a good 100% whole wheat bread that is fresh. I am certain that once you add the choice of good healthy items for the sandwich covered with the good bread, your child will love it. Later on, you can slowly introduce other varieties to him/her.

Fortunately, we now have available to us bagels, crusties, and many breads with 100% whole wheat plus many other nutrients in the breads for healthy living.

If you are making sandwiches with sauces, it is easy to eliminate butter or margarine. Replace it with mustard, low-calorie Mayonnaise, light cream cheese. It will eliminate 100 calories to your sandwich.

We have given you a start on your creative power sandwich making. Use your imagination and run with it.
